doing more good

Here at Upsher-Smith, we strive to foster an inclusive culture that will always “do more good” — more good with the high-quality products we create, more good for the diverse patients we serve, and more good for the passionate and inspiring people we employ.

As we celebrate our 100-year anniversary, remember that, when you join us, you become a part of a company that enjoys a respected past built on strong relationships and deeply held values.

Yet the success of Upsher-Smith depends, as it always has, on its people. You’ll be empowered to grow your career and encouraged to make an impact, within these walls or out in the community.

How will you Do More Good™?

why upsher‑smith?

Habitat for Humanity

Each year, the Upsher-Smith Global Regulatory Affairs and Quality teams take time off work to participate in an annual charitable service project for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity and its sister program A Brush With Kindness. Using saws, hammers and a whole lot of elbow grease, volunteers work in shifts at several build locations throughout the summer. They do so out of a commitment to corporate social responsibility and a sense of obligation to give back—something we all share here at Upsher-Smith!

Japanese/English LANGUAGE CLASS

With our new owner, Sawai Pharmaceutical Co., based in Japan, employees at Upsher-Smith have made an effort to learn more about Japanese language and culture. While celebrating the successful completion of a language course, several Upsher-Smith employees had lunch with their Sawai colleagues and spent much of their time conversing to test out their new skills!

living the vision

“We improve the health and lives of patients through our unwavering commitment to high-quality products and sustainable growth.” That’s our vision here at Upsher-Smith, and we strive to make it an important part of every workday. In 2018, President & CEO Rusty Field kicked off the first-ever Living the Vision contest, with big cash prizes for those employees who go above and beyond to bring the vision to life!

flexible Workspace

For office employees, Upsher-Smith fosters a strong spirit of teamwork by providing a modern, attractive workplace. One of the most popular areas of our Maple Grove headquarters is our open-air, naturally lit Atrium, which offers a large gathering space for people to work independently or together, eat lunch, attend special events, or watch our TV wall for company announcements and national news. We also have many other comfortable communal areas, such as our East Lunchroom, multiple break rooms and coffee bar areas, which give ample opportunity for collaboration as well as relaxation.

hear about our collaboration with sawai

Nozomi
Nozomi MansfieldSenior Administrative Assistant

“I enjoy working with the people of Sawai because I feel I can learn a lot from their expertise and experience. It must be challenging for them to learn and understand a different culture, yet they are very approachable and friendly! Their guidance and devotion to their work gives me motivation every day, and makes me feel that each of us has an important role to play. Though Upsher-Smith and Sawai are already aligned with our mutual patient-centric cultures, I appreciate Sawai employees’ ongoing efforts to look for ways to combine and capitalize on the many strengths of both American and Japanese cultures.”

Jim
Jim Young, PhDChief Science Officer

“Our Sawai colleagues offer a fresh perspective here at Upsher-Smith. They readily provide helpful suggestions for us to consider, and they are equally eager to learn from our company and about the United States. In the departments I run, teamwork comes especially easy because of the universality of science. Our spoken languages may be different, but our problems and solutions are similar. In our shared culture of collaboration and accountability, there no competing agendas—we are all running in the same direction and are aligned.”

“In my almost 30 years with Upsher-Smith, I’ve never been as excited about a new venture for the company—and for me, personally! Many things are so different and fresh from anything I’ve done before. The people of Sawai have been super fun to get to know and they are always so appreciative of receiving input and feedback. I’ve embraced the challenge of learning certain aspects of the Japanese culture, and even training myself to use English a little differently to get my points across in our work conversations. There is so much growth potential for this partnership!”

volunteering

We go beyond medicine, as a company and as individuals, by regularly supporting and participating in charitable activities that focus on helping people live healthier, fuller lives. Many of these activities take the form of regional and national walks that help build awareness for seizure disorders and migraine headaches—the two conditions our branded prescription medications help to treat.

Health and wellbeing

Health and wellbeing is important to everyone at Upsher-Smith. Living a healthful lifestyle can reduce stress and the occurrence of injuries and illnesses. Upsher-Smith encourages its employees to use the wellbeing program, which helps track healthy activities.
